Lions now control their own destiny
PSU took two from Minnesota today, winning the first game 5-3 and the second 9-7. The two wins coupled with Illinois two losses to Purdue moved the Nits into sole possession of third place in the Big Ten standings. With a win tomorrow, or another Illini loss to Purdue, the Nits will have the third seed, thus positioning themselves to avoid Michigan on day two of the tournament.
Drew O’Neil came on to record saves in both games of the doubleheader tying his PSU record of seven saves in a season. In the second game, O’Neil did give up an earned run in the ninth, the first time that he’s ever given up an regular season earned run to a Big Ten opponent in the two years that he’s been pitching for PSU. O’Neil did give up an earned run last year but it was in the Big Ten tournament not the regular season. The sole run last year came when the Minnesota’s Jeremy Chlan hit a game winning double in the 11th inning eliminating PSU from the tournament. Amazingly, Chlan was the guy who got the RBI today also. Surprisingly, Chlan bats out of the ninth spot for Minnesota but somehow he has O’Neil’s number.
