UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Despite a game-tying two-run home run from sophomore Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the bottom of the fifth inning, Iowa’s red-hot bats rattled off 10 runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth en route to a 13-9 victory over the Nittany Lions on a cold Sunday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Still very much in the hunt for a Big Ten Tournament berth, Penn State (21-25, 8-10 Big Ten) next heads to the Metrodome in Minneapolis for the penultimate Big Ten series of the season against Minnesota.

Steranka’s two-run blast to right field knotted the score at 3-3 heading into the top of the sixth. However, Iowa (21-25, 8-10) stormed back with three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and five more in the eighth to build a 10-run advantage. Junior Michael Glantz (Marietta, Ga.) fueled a two-run eighth inning with his first home run of the season. A four-run ninth from the Lions trimmed the Iowa lead to 13-9, but that was as close as they would get.

A ninth inning rally fell short as the Penn State baseball team (21-25, 8-10 Big Ten) dropped its second straight game to Iowa, 13-9.

The Nittany Lions scored six runs in the final two innings, including four in the ninth, but couldn’t overcome the large deficit.

Iowa (21-25, 8-10) used sacrifice bunts to score its first three runs before breaking the game open with 10 combined runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Iowa pitcher Nick Brown quieted the Penn State baseball team’s bats Saturday as the Hawkeyes rolled to a 9-3 victory.

The Nittany Lions (21-24, 8-9 Big Ten) scored first when Ben Heath had a run-scoring single in the first inning. Brown did not allow another Penn State run until the Hawkeyes (20-25, 7-10) built a 5-1 lead.

Brown allowed just two runs in seven innings while striking out four.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After shutting out Iowa for the first three innings, the Hawkeyes came alive with five runs in the middle frames on their way to downing the Penn State baseball team, 9-3, on Saturday at a windy Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Freshman Steve Snyder (West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore Joey DeBernardis (Lake Zurich, Ill.) each extended their hit streaks to nine games in the loss. Three Lion (21-24, 8-9 Big Ten) players finished with multiple hits, including junior Ben Heath (Huntersville, N.C.) who went 2-for-4 with his first triple of the season. The teams round out the series on Sunday at 11 a.m., live on the Big Ten Network.

One of DeBernardis’ two hits left the yard for his second home run of the season, while he also doubled in the sixth. He was one of three Nittany Lions who finished 2-for-4, including Heath and sophomore Sean Deegan (Readington, N.J.).

Mike Wanamaker pitched a career-high eight innings Friday to lead the Penn State baseball team (21-23, 8-8 Big Ten) to a 6-2 victory over Iowa (19-25, 6-10).

Wanamaker allowed 11 hits, but he erased many of them with 10 strikeouts while allowing just two runs. The win improved Wanamaker's record to 4-2.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Early-inning hitting coupled with strong pitching from redshirt senior Mike Wanamaker (Upper Nyack, N.Y.) led the Penn State baseball team over Iowa, 6-2, for its sixth consecutive Big Ten win on Friday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. In a contest that was nationally televised on the Big Ten Network, the Nittany Lions (21-23, 8-8 Big Ten) did not disappoint, scoring six runs in the game's first three innings while riding a season-high eight innings and career-high 10 strikeouts from Wanamaker. The teams reconvene for game two of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m.

With the win, the Nittany Lions move within a single game of first place, currently held by Michigan, Minnesota and Northwestern, who are 9-7 in Big Ten play. Iowa (19-25, 6-10 Big Ten), currently in 10th place, is still within three games of first.
