Nittany Lions hand Michigan State three losses after it entered the weekend with a stellar 28-11 record.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team wrapped up one of its best weekends in recent memory by topping Michigan State, 9-1, for its fifth straight Big Ten win on Sunday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Junior Ben Heath (Huntersville, N.C.) hit his 16th and 17th home runs of the season to tie the 32-year Penn State (20-23, 7-8 Big Ten) season record while senior David Lutz (West Chester, Pa.) made his first-career start and went the distance for the Lions’ first nine-inning complete game since 2008. The squad hosts Iowa next weekend, with all three games broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.

“We’re trying to win every inning,” said head coach Robbie Wine. “The stuff we've been preaching all year is taking place right now.”

The victory gives Penn State its first series sweep of the season while in the process, scoring the most runs in a three-game Big Ten series in school history. The Nittany Lions won the series by a combined score of 49-13 after winning the first two games, 18-7 and 22-5.

David Lutz made the most of his first career start as he pitched a complete game Sunday in the Penn State baseball team's 9-1 win against Michigan State.

By taking the mound, Lutz also tied the school-record for pitching appearances in a single season (29).

The senior got off to a rocky start in the first inning when he allowed a single and hit a batter to begin the game. However, he induced a double play and escaped the inning without allowing any runs.

From there, Lutz settled in and cruised through the full nine innings. He allowed one run on nine hits, while striking out four batters and walking none.

Another balanced offensive attack coupled with a strong outing from Wanamaker leads Penn State to its fourth straight Big Ten win.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – One day after tying a season-high with 18 runs, the Penn State baseball team carried the momentum into Saturday, notching five first-inning runs on its way to a 22-5 win over Michigan State in the first-annual Wounded Warrior Game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 40 combined runs over the first two games mark the most scored in consecutive Big Ten games in school history. The 22-run effort was also the most since Apr. 4, 2001 when the Lions bested Cornell 26-4. Penn State (19-23, 6-8 Big Ten) now looks for the series sweep on Sunday. Please note the new start time of 12:05 p.m.

Wearing specially designed camo jerseys, Penn State batted around three times on the afternoon to up its series total to six. The Nittany Lions batted around in the first inning after batting around in each of its last three at-bats on Friday night. At one point, the squad batted around six times in the span of nine innings bridging the two games.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – What started off as an early Spartan lead quickly changed as Penn State turned a 6-2 deficit into a convincing 18-7 win over Michigan State (28-12, 7-6 Big Ten) on Friday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Nittany Lions (18-23, 5-8 Big Ten) batted around in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, scoring 16 of their 18 runs in the process. Penn State has now scored 50 runs over its last three Big Ten wins against two of the four teams who were tied for first place entering the weekend. Game two of the series is Saturday at 2:05 p.m. and features the first annual Wounded Warrior Benefit Game.

“We just picked up where we left off in the last couple games at Ohio State,” said head coach Robbie Wine. “It seems like the confidence is there, the energy is there. Hopefully, we keep it going.”

Nittany Lions begin the second half of their Big Ten schedule against the Spartans.

• The Penn State baseball team looks to knock off its second first-place team in as many weekends when it hosts Michigan State in a key series beginning Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spartans (28-11, 7-5 Big Ten) are one of four teams tied atop the Big Ten standings, along with Ohio State, who the Nittany Lions (17-23, 4-8 Big Ten) topped (2-of-3) last weekend. The highlight of the series is Saturday afternoon’s first-annual Wounded Warrior Project Benefit Game.

• Saturday’s game was developed to honor and empower wounded warriors. Its purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service members, to help severely injured men and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. WWP is a national, apolitical organization headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla. For more, check out the official event web page at GoPSUsports.com/woundedwarrior.
