Just when the Penn State baseball team finally got a strong pitching performance, its hitting and fielding couldn’t get going.

The Nittany Lions (14-20, 2-7 Big Ten) had three costly errors Sunday that enabled Purdue (20-14, 5-4) to come back for a 4-3 win.

With the Lions leading 3-2 in bottom of the eighth inning, Purdue’s Brad Schreiber was called on to pinch hit with the bases loaded. He hit a sharp ground ball that third baseman Jordan Steranka couldn’t handle, and the tying and go-ahead runs crossed the plate to give Purdue the lead for good.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue turned three errors into three unearned runs to hand the Nittany Lion baseball team a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Lambert Field. With the Lions leading 3-2 in the eighth, a bouncer to third would have ended the inning, but a fielding error allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score. Senior Mike Wanamaker (Upper Nyack, N.Y.) dazzled on the mound in his best start of the season, allowing only six hits and one earned run over 6.2 strong innings. Penn State (14-20, 2-7 Big Ten) returns to action with a pair of home midweek games, against Duquesne on Tuesday and Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A four-run first inning proved too much as a resilient Penn State baseball squad clawed back, but could never pull even in a 6-4 loss to Purdue on Saturday afternoon at Lambert Field. After a tough first innings, sophomore Ryan Ignas (North Wales, Pa.) settled down nicely to pitch into the sixth inning. Senior Louie Picconi (North Merrick, N.Y.) finished with two RBI, including a two-out double in the sixth inning to pull within 4-2. The Lions (14-19, 2-6 Big Ten) now look to salvage game three of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Junior Ben Heath hits his 12th home run of the season, good for eighth in single-season school history.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Penn State baseball team scored five runs against one of the conference’s top pitchers, but it wasn’t enough as Purdue exploded for 18 runs over the first five innings to hand the Lions (14-18, 2-5 Big Ten) an 18-7 defeat in Friday’s series opener at Lambert Field. Matt Bischoff, a two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, came in with a 2.09 ERA, third in the conference. Junior Ben Heath (Huntersville, N.C.) had the first blow, a long solo home run to deep left-center field for his 12th of the season and third in the last two games, but the Boilermakers’ offense continued to respond. The teams reconvene for game two of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.

With his 2-for-3 performance, Heath extended his career-high hitting streak to 19 games, good for sole possession of fourth place in school history. He is hitting .389 on the season, including .459 (34-for-74) during the streak. Only two Nittany Lions have ever recorded hit streaks of 20 games or longer, a list Heath hopes to join on Saturday.
