Yet, the two programs have never faced each other on the diamond.

That should change in two seasons, when Nebraska begins competition as a member of the Big Ten.

The history the Cornhuskers have built while playing in the Big 12 has the Penn State players and coaches excited to face Nebraska and hopefully create a new rivalry.

Penn State junior catcher Ben Heath doesn’t know what to expect when it comes to the baseball draft. But he’s ready for anything.

“I’m really busy right now, talking to a lot of teams,” Heath said Monday during a visit to the CBS 21 News studio. “Hopefully, something will work out. If not I’ll be back in school next year and hope to have another good year.”

It will be hard to top the season he just had.

Despite his team giving up 86 runs in nine games last week, Penn State baseball coach Robbie Wine learned something about his pitching staff — it’s better than he thought.

Though the team gave up an average of 10.9 runs per game in last week’s seven-straight losses, Wine said those games allowed him to work more pitchers into the rotation than he originally planned.

Freshman Steve Snyder was in unusual surroundings during Saturday’s game against Texas State.

The Penn State baseball team’s regular center fielder warmed up his arm in the bullpen located in foul territory of right field in the Bobcat Baseball Stadium.

When the Nittany Lions (4-8) were retired in the top of the seventh inning, Snyder jogged out to the mound to pitch for the first time since early last season, when he was in high school.

Snyder, along with first baseman Joey DeBernardis, allowed no runs while pitching the seventh and eighth innings in Saturday’s 15-6 loss to the Bobcats, after Penn State used eight pitchers the game before.

The two position players welcomed the opportunity to give the Lions’ pitchers a rest after they played nine games in 10 days against tough competition

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One of nearly two dozen undrafted rookies with Carolina, Anthony Scirrotto faces long odds to make the Panthers’ regular-season roster.

Only the former Penn State safety has a fallback plan: professional baseball.

Sure, Scirrotto hasn’t played competitively since he was a power-hitting high school shortstop four years ago. But it didn’t stop the Kansas City Royals from taking him last week in the 50th and final round of the draft.

“This is my first priority, I want to play football,” Scirrotto said after Monday’s offseason workout with the Panthers. “But I look at (baseball) as a business opportunity.”

How Scirrotto got drafted in baseball and not football is a story that involves a pulled hamstring, a scout who got a bigger job, a high school coach who became a police detective but kept his baseball connections and a round of golf.
