The Penn State baseball team (10-13) used the big fifth to defeat the Golden Flashes, 10-8, Wednesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Flashes broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth when Jimmy Rider scored on David Lyon’s bloop single that floated just over the head of Lions first baseman Joey DeBernardis. But, their lead didn’t last long.

The Lions took advantage of sloppy defense and wild pitching by the Flashes while scoring seven runs on just one hit in the fifth. Of the 10 Lions who batted, two reached on errors, three walked and one was hit by a pitch.

Penn State coach Robbie Wine said the team was due for some breaks to go its way.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Following a 9-8 loss at Kent State on Tuesday, the Penn State baseball team bounced back 24 hours later with an impressive 10-8 victory over the Golden Flashes on Wednesday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Lions used a seven-run fifth inning on the way to their fourth-consecutive home victory. Freshman Steve Snyder (West Chester, Pa.) had the big hit with a three-run triple while fellow freshman John Walter (Haddonfield, N.J.) tossed 5.2 strong innings out of the bullpen for his first-career win.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Strong pitching from redshirt senior Mike Wanamaker (Upper Nyack, N.Y.) coupled with a balanced offensive attack led the Penn State baseball team to a 7-3 win over Kent State to open the Coca-Cola Classic on Friday. Five Nittany Lions posted multiple hits, led by a 3-for-4 performance from sophomore Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Penn State continues tournament play on Saturday with a split doubleheader against Columbia (11 a.m.) and Winthrop (6 p.m.).

“Getting the first win on this road trip is huge,” said junior Mario Eramo (Houston, Texas) who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. “It gets us back on track. We’re trying to get things going again, so it’s a really good win for the team.”
