Despite tying the game in the top of the ninth inning, the Penn State baseball team lost, 5-4, when Texas State hit a walk-off single in the home half of the ninth.

Freshman Steve Snyder tied the game at four with an RBI infield single, but the Nittany Lions (4-8) couldn’t force the game into extra innings. Texas State’s Shaun Garcia singled to center field to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to finish off a sweep of the Lions.

Lion starter Stephen Hill pitched a strong game while getting a no-decision. Hill went six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits.

Steven Hill knew his teammates had a rally in them.

The Penn State baseball team had lost its last four games by a total of 44 runs, but Hill exited Sunday’s game with his team trailing by only two runs.

The Nittany Lions tied the game in the eighth inning, but Texas State won, 5-4, on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning off junior pitcher Jesse Alfreno.

“We haven’t been in many ball games. The last couple of them, we tipped our cap early and bowed out,” Hill said.

STAFF REPORT

When they needed them, and when they didn’t, the hits kept coming during the weekend for the Texas State Bobcats, who polished off a three-game baseball sweep of Penn State at Bobcat Field.

Following blowout wins of 20-6 on Friday and 15-6 on Saturday, the Bobcats needed clutch late hitting Sunday to pull out a 5-4 win to complete the sweep. With the game tied, 4-4, going to the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Livingstone walked on four pitches to lead off, moved to second on a sacrifice by Kyle Kubitza, took third on Jason Martinson’s single and crossed on a sacrifice fly by Shaun Garcia.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite battling back from an early deficit, Texas State responded with 10 of the game’s final 11 runs on its way to a 15-6 win over the Penn State baseball team on Saturday. The Nittany Lions evened the score at five in the fourth inning, but the Bobcats responded with 10 runs over the next two innings to break the game open. Penn State looks to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.

For the second straight game, Penn State racked up double-digit hits. This time, four Lions finished with a pair – junior Bobby Jacobs (West Chester, Pa.), redshirt freshman Elliot Searer (Lewistown, Pa.) and sophomores Joey DeBernardis (Lake Zurich, Ill.) and Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Jacobs led the way with his first home run of the season along with a double. Searer also had his first-career multi-hit game in only his second-career start.
