Last week the SID took a little shortcut by combining the game notes for Lasalle and Youngstown State. It appears the shortcut this week is to just not produce a game notes for Villanova at all. Unfortunately, the Villanova SID doesn’t produce game notes for any of their games so readers are out of luck today.

Today will feature a battle of namesakes as Villanova has a Wes Borden playing for them also (coincidently, Nova’s Wes Borden is from State College).

Huge series. PSU can unofficially dig themselves out of that whole they created for themselves at the beginning of the season with a series win in Champaign. Reportedly, TJ Macy’s performance on Wednesday has earned him a Saturday start with Mike Lorentson replacing Seth Whitehill on Sunday. That’s a little surprising in that Whitehill has never faced Illinois and he often gives teams problems the first time he faces them.

This is the way the team should perform during the mid-week games. This was a 180 turnaround fromt he Akron game last week. The team came out focused, scoring in five of the first six innings and the pitching staff was literally, not figuratively, unhittable.

(NOTE to the official scorer: would you PLEASE make sure that the first hit of the game is a legit hit. Picconi should have been charged with an error on a soft liner that he misplayed in the third. If the scorer records that as an error then the staff has a no hitter going into seventh).

Things did get a little dicey for a while in the seventh and eighth, where for a while, it looked like we might have a replay of last night where our opponent stages a furious rally. Eventually, Hawkins and Kelley each settled down before too much damage was done.

I hope something works because to date little has. I suppose the good news is that the Lions first three series have been against the three top clubs in the conference. Then again maybe those squads are only atop the conference because they’ve fatten up their records by playing us.
